"Our son was in a public school, regular classroom when we noticed he was really struggling. We had him tested privately and found he was twice exceptional (2E - highly gifted with a learning disability). It was frustrating that the teachers and system never noticed a child that was both gifted and learning disabled for six long years. The public school's response was that our son must go through "the process" (evaluations, testing, IEP's, 504's) before he could be considered for receiving any help/assistance. This could take months or years. We then reviewed other programs/schools that might have benefited our son. We found the cost extremely high and they too had their "process" which we must go through before any assistance could be rendered to a child. We also found that the programs were generalized to fit a wide population of children. Our son would have had to fit into a generalized program rather than having a program tailored for his talents and challenges. We met with the educationally experienced staff at Open Doors and they proposed a program to capitalize on our son's strengths and address his areas of challenge. Open Doors is the only program we found that focused on the child and their needs rather than focusing on "the process". In essence we found people passionate about eduation and meeting the needs of kids. Our son is now in high spirits about school and is learning in an environment that promotes education rather than standardized test scores."
