Curriculum
Based on the various choices of study throughout the year the children will learn math, language, social studies, reading, science, sensory and intuititve skills. The arts are woven throughout the curriculum. Animals, gardening, and other outside activities are integrated into the curriculum. Throughout each unit of study, a time of reflection is part of the children and teachers' (guides') experience. The children and guides discuss how the topic/passion affects them. At the end of the study, there is a discussion about any changes that happened around them or within them during the course of study. The culminating project is a journey and project connected with the theme that gives back to the community. This helps the student visualize their connection to the outer world. A portfolio of each child's work is kept throughout the year. The student and guide reflect together on her/his project looking at both strengths and weaknesses.
We at Open Doors incorporate many aspects of the arts in every unit of study. This includes drawing, painting, ceramics, mime, music, gardening, and others. Experiencing the arts opens the heart!
